This past Wednesday saw the release of Radical’s Abattoir #1 and Hotwire: Deep Cut #2. Both titles continue Radical’s ongoing practice of hiring the most talented conceptual artists available, teaming them up with writers that are just as at home developing film properties, as they are creating comics, and letting them stretch the bounds of what’s traditionally happening in comics today. The results are story lines and art that jump off the page, grab readers by the throat, and don’t let go until the last page is turned.
First up is the chilling, supernatural tale Abattoir #1, from director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw franchise, Mother’s Day, Repo! The Genetic Opera), which is set in the cold beauty of Middle America during the late 1980s. After a brutal massacre takes place in a gorgeous house, real estate agent and family man Richard Ashwalt is assigned the impossible task of picking up the pieces and selling the property. As Richard inspects the blood-soaked grounds, a twisted old man journeys to the house with a sinister and terrifying purpose. Richard is about to be drawn into a web of shadows, murders and massacres that will shatter him to his very core.
Abattoir was written by Rob Levin and Troy Peteri, with art by Bing Cansino, and a cover by Tae Young Choi.
Also out this week was Hotwire: Deep Cut #2, created by Steve Pugh – who also handles art for the series – and Warren Ellis. Deep Cut #2 continues the tale of a world gone mad, as the dead drift into its major cities, and Bertus Rantz and his private security contractors investigate a crash, as Detective Exorcist Alice Hotwire cools her heels in a detention cell – only to emerge to the cheers of her co-workers in the police force. As Alice avoids her fellow officers and deals with a rampaging Rantz as well as her paranormal ex-boyfriend, a blue-light housed in a robotic body has taken one of the crash victims on her own accord…but for what purpose? Can Hotwire and Mobey uncover the truth of the car crash and discover the identity of this mysterious entity before Rantz finishes his crusade against all blue-lights? Next week on November 3rd, will see the release of Shrapnel: Hubris #3, the final chapter of the Shrapnel: Hubris mini-series, which brings to an end the second mini-series in the Shrapnel trilogy, which began with Shrapnel: Aristeia Rising.

The 56 page issue comes from co-creators Nick Sagan and Mark Long, with writing by Sagan and Clinnette Minnis, art by the crew at Concept Art House, cover by Stephan Martiniere and lettering by Sean Konot.
